History of the NSL - The National Soccer League
Papua New Guinea's most ambitious project yet was the introduction of a semi-professional competition in 2006 under the auspices of National Soccer League. 5 franchises initially lined up in August for a season of home and away games.
2008 saw the expansion of the league to 8 with franchises from across the country and the success of the competition is very pleasing. Crowds are up with record numbers attending many games during the season.
Two consecutives washouts curtailed the finals in 2009 with the prize money being shared between the 4 teams playing in the respective matches.
PNGFA O League representatives Hekari Souths FC performed creditably during the OFC 2008/9 competition almost causing a surprise pool topping performance. This creates much optimism for the new campaign having just been nominated as 2008/9 NSL representatives for the 2009/10 O League.
