Papua New
Guinea Football Association's new tournament structure was intorudced in 2005. It sees clubs go through the
regional tournaments first then the national tournaments. Each of
the 4 regions of PNG; Highlands, Momase, New Guinea Islands and the
Southern hosts a Regional Club championship and the winner and the runner-ups enter the
National Club championship. The Regional
Championship which takes place before the National
Championship in a year.
The Regional Club Championships
The Regional Club Championships, the first tournament
is held and hosted by each region, in a province in that
region, which was chosen to host the Regional Club Championships.
This tournament, the Regional Club championships is an annual
event.
In order for a club to take part in the Regional Club
Championships, it must belong to an Association that is affiliated
to the Papua New Guinea Football Association. Secondly the club must
be either the first or second place getters in their respective
division at the end of each competition the year.
Each association in a province which has affiliated to
PNGFA can send their first and second place senior men and women
club teams to take part in the Regional Club championships in their
respective regions. The Regional Club Championships held by each
region is not controlled and run by PNGFA but is sanctioned by PNGFA
and controlled and run by the Regional Association.
After the Regional Club the champions and runners-up
men and women club teams are then eligible to take part in the
National Club Championships.
The National Club Championships
The National Club Championships the next biggest club
tournament in the country follows right after all the regions,
Highlands, Momase, New Guinea Islands and the Southern have
conducted their respective Regional Club championships.
The National Club championships is made of 16 teams, 4

Runners-up Men and Women club teams from each region). The

Regional Championships
Each association affiliated with the Papua New Guinea
Football Association makes a select squad of a men's team and
women's team to take part in their respective Regional Championships
. Again each of the 4 regions, Highlands, Momase, New Guinea Islands
and the Southern host their respective Regional
Championships.
The Regional Championships is another PNGFA sanctioned
tournament but like the Regional Club Championships is not
controlled and run by PNGFA but by the hosting Regional Association
(i.e. if the Momase region was holding its regional championships
the Momase Regional Soccer Federation would be in charge of the
tournament.).
The Champions and Runners-up men and women teams of
the Regional Championships then represent that region in the
National Championships.
National Championships
The National Championships tournament showcases the
best selected sides of both men and women teams whom have qualified
through the Regional Championships to represent their
region.
This tournament like the National Club championships
is sanctioned, controlled and run by PNGFA and is run bi-annually.
After this tournament the Papua New Guinea National
side is selected for both male and female.
