Events Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) has adopted a new tournament structure and introduced it in 2005. The new structure sees that clubs go through a Regional Club Championship tournament first then the National Cluc Championships. Each of the 4 regions of PNG; Highlands, Momase, New Guinea Islands and the Southern host Regional Club Campionships and the winner and the runner-ups enter the National Club Championships. The Regional Club Chapionship which takes place before the National Club Championship in a year. Regional Club Championships The Regional Club Championship is hosted by any association selected by the participating associations in the region. In order for a club to take part in the Regional Club Championships, it must belong to an Association that is currenlty affiliated to the PNGFA. Secondly the club must be either the first or second place getter in their respective division at the end of each competition year. Each association in a province which has affiliated to PNGFA can send their first and second place senior men and women teams to take part in the Regional Club championships in their respective regions. The Regional Club Championships held by each region is not controlled and run by PNGFA but is sanctioned by PNGFA and controlled and run by the Regional Association. After the Regional Club championships the champions and runners-up men and women teams are then eligible to take part in the National Club Championships. National Club Championships The National Club Championship is the next biggest club tournament in the country follows right after all the regions, Highlands, Momase, New Guinea Islands and the Southern have conducted their respective Regional Club championships. The National Club championship is made of 16 teams, 4 from each region (Champion Men and Women club teams, and Runners-up Men and Women club teams from each region). The National Club championship is the only sanctioned tournament run and controlled by PNGFA and run annually. The champions of the National Club championship get to represent PNG in the OFC club championships. But this has now changed as OFC changed its competition structure. OFC has now introduced the O-League in place of the Oceania Club championship and its regulations states that the winner of a national league must represent the country in the O-league. To meet this OFC requirement, PNGFA has now introduced the semi-professional National Soccer League (NSL) to give PNG clubs a chance to take part in the O-league by winning the NSL title in PNG. Only the winner of the NSL competition in PNG will represent the the country. Regional Association Championships (Regional Association Cup) Each association affiliated with the PNGFA forms a select squad of both men's and women's team to take part in their respective Regional Championships This championshionship is called Association vs Association . Again each of the 4 regions, Highlands, Momase, New Guinea Islands and the Southern host their respective Regional Championships. The Regional Championships is another PNGFA sanctioned tournament but like the Regional Club Championships, it is not controlled and run by PNGFA but by the host Association. The Champions and Runners-up men and women teams of the Regional Association Championships then represent that region in the National Association Championships This national Championship is call the PNGFA CUP. National Championships (PNGFA Cup) The National Championships tournament showcases the best selected sides of both men and women teams who have qualified through the Regional Association Championships to represent their region. This tournament like the National Club championships is sanctioned and run by PNGFA and is run bi-annually. The winner works away with the PNGFA Cup and keeps the champion title till the next tournament.
