Plans mooted to start Pacific Cup. By Frank GENAIA of SPP, Wednesday, June 10, 1009

PLANS are being made to start the Pacific soccer cup.
Papua New Guinea vice president John Kapi-Natto said this while attending the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) in Nassau, Bahamas.
Kapi-Natto in an email told Post-Courier last week that there were several significant issues discussed which was good news to PNGFA.
All members attended the OFC congress including FIFA President Joseph Blatter who gave the keynote address.
“A proposed annual Pacific Cup has been agreed to by five members from the Oceania region.
“The countries are PNG, Solomons, Vanuatu, Fiji and New Caledonia. “A proposal is being drafted and will be put forward to the OFC to approve it and assist the Pacific Cup which will start sometime next year before the next SP Games in Noumea, New Caledonia,” Kapi-Natto said.
Meanwhile, he said PNG, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu would gear up for international matches sometime in September.
“And also I have discussed for an international friendly match against Fiji’s national team and Fiji soccer CEO Bob Kumar has indicated early September,” he said. Kapi-Natto said the reason was that the PNGFA mens national team must get ready before the next World Cup qualifier during the SP Games. Kapi-Natto said the other agenda item discussed was an ongoing match with Solomon Islands Football Federation.
“I have discussed with the Solomon Islands Football Federation for our PNGFA club cup champion, both men and women, that a friendly match must be played against their champions every year.
“This is to complement the FA cup champions men and women. This year PNG Power women FC of Lae has been given the green light to play Solomon Islands womens team one. SIFF has welcomed that initiative with PNGFA.
“Our Kimbe men’s champion will miss out this year but will be in plans set for next year.”
He said the last agenda was the eight team format which has been approved by the OFC executives and the Congress for the coming O-League.
The O-League is likely to kick off in October.
“It will be the East and West! The East will be made up of PNG, Solomons, Vanuatu and Fiji and the West will be made up of New Caledonia, New Zealand with two teams and Tahiti.
“The draw will be made soon once Solomons, New Caledonia and Tahiti find their winners to represent them in the O-League,” he said. Fiji will be represented by Lautoka FC, Vanuatu will be Tafea, PNG is Hekari United FC, New Zealand has Auckland City and Waitakere FC while the others have to confirm their winners.
