PNG has potential

Papua New Guinea soccer (football) has a huge potential.

Oceania Football Confederation's (OFC) Win In Oceania deputy senior project manager Billy Vaitoare expressed his amazement during his visit to Port Moresby last week.

"I was amazed at how much talent PNG has and the athleticism they have.

It goes to show that PNG has a huge potential in football," Vaitoare said.

Vaitoare's visit to Port Moresby last Monday was specifically to lay the foundations of the Win In Oceania program which is funded by FIFA. Vaitoare left the country over the weekend. For the first time in history FIFA has allocated $US8 million (K23 million) for the Win In Oceania (WIO) program for the 11 member countries including PNG in OFC region.

Time and money was spent and it took years to finally put together this comprehensive program to help develop and promote football in the Oceania region.

This program was in the pipeline for years and it was finally launched in January this year and now I am in PNG looking to lay the foundation and see where necessary what the PNG Football Association under president David Chung really needs," Vaitoare said.

The program is designed where the recipient needs to explain why they need the money and what for and will have to explain later to OFC if the money provided served its purpose.

Also the money provided should be used within the given time or else this money will be forfeited to other member associations.

Vaitoare said: "The WIO program is result focused."

He said the WIO program covers all aspect of soccer (football), administration, medical, communication, equipments, and the game itself.

"In order to have the game played you need to have all these aspects covered. The game itself is simple enough, but for the game to take a step up it needs all things to happen and this is when other aspects of the game come hand in hand. WIO is about promoting and developing football in Oceania -Win Oceania for Oceania," he said.

PNGFA's new consultant and adviser David Brand is working closely with Vaitoare to put out the first phase of work PNGFA needed.

And it seems PNGFA's list of priority is heading towards medical and communication, National Soccer League and administration. Administration also includes PNGFA member associations and their local competitions.

Brand said: "PNG has the potential to excel in football."
