Bucknell defeated PNG U20 women

Coming off a pair of contests to open the 2016 season over the weekend, the Bison relied on their depth in Tuesday’s contest, giving head coach Kelly Cook an opportunity to look at the youth on her roster.

“It was great to see everybody out there contributing,” said Cook. “Some great offensive moments and I liked seeing some new faces out there to get a look at the future.”

Bucknell got on the board just two minutes into the contest. Carly Baggott sent the ball over to the right side of the field to Sarah Bresette, who crossed the ball into the box for the finish by Bailey Hurst.

The Bison scored again in the 18th minute, this time off the foot of Bresette. Sam Powers kicked the ball down the right side line to Camille Andrews, who drove the ball into the box and found an open Bresette for the goal.

Bucknell added another goal in the 36th minute. Following a goal kick from Papua New Guinea, Bresette headed the ball to Casey Gray, who headed the ball to a cutting Gabi Rosenfeld to give the Bison a 3-0 advantage.

Two minutes later, Maddie Mulford found the back of the net to add to the Bucknell lead. Both Gray and Shelby Roberts were each credited with an assist.

The Bison scored once more in the match, coming in the 68th minute off a left-footed blast from Alexis Gannon. The ball slipped past the outreached arms of the goalie and into the net.

Papua New Guinea started slow in the first half with four shot attempts, but put together a strong second half, outshooting Bucknell 10-8.

Papua New Guinea, located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean north of Australia, is hosting the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. As part of the team’s preparation, Papua New Guinea is in the United States in playing several matches.

Dani Kaufman played all 90 minutes in goal for the Bison, recording five saves, while making tough stops on a flurry of shot attempts in the second half.
Bucknell returns to action this weekend with a trip to Ohio. The Bison will take on Dayton Friday at 7:30 p.m., and conclude with Wright St. on Sunday at 2 p.m.
