The Gulf Province franchise produced a surprisingly polished performance, beating fellow newcomers Huawei PS FC 3-2 in the Telikom National Soccer League round two match of the Southern Conference at the Bisini Soccer Oval on the weekend.
The Steven Mune coached side struck early in the third minute through striker Michel Gita from a Samson Kareva cross from the corner to take an early 1-0 lead.
United bounced back 15 minutes later to score from a through ball that caught Erema sweeper Cyril Muta flat-footed, and gave Henry Ronney a chance to slam home a goal off his powerful left foot for the equaliser.
PS United then took matters into their own hands when Steven Mais picked up a through ball from Desmond Sow to score their second goal just before half-time.
Following the break a cross from John Baulo found an unmarked Ronny, who had a golden chance to stretch their lead, but his open goal attempt hit the bar to let Erema off the hook.
Erema also missed a chance with Gita missing his second by an inch over the bar, after good lead-up play from Tau Winnie.
The Gulf franchise’s luck finally arrived when Amona created opportunities for Ivan Sevese and Winnie.
Sevese head the equaliser and Winnie the winner to steal an unlikely victory. Winnie also took out Man of the Match award from Telikom PNG.
A proud coach Mune said after the loss last weekend against Rapatona, the win this weekend gives them the confidence and proves that they are not here to make up the numbers.
“I am seeing improvement in every game which is a good thing and with the inclusion of Cyril Muta in defense is a plus for the side,” said Mune.
In the earlier match Hekari United hammered PKA Rapatona 4-0 with Koriak Upaiga continuing his goal-scoring spree with a double.
In the other match played yesterday, Gigira Laitepo United registered their first win after beating FC Port Moresby 3-2.
Northern Conference results: Besta PNG United defeated Goroka Gosiha 4-1, Lae City Dwellers beat Welgris Morobe United 1-0 and Madang edged out Admiralty 1-0.
