This year five Papua New Guinea referees are privileged to receive another set of uniforms.
PNG Football Association Technical Director, Taku Niebo and Referee Development Officer Job Minan made the presentation of new sets of uniforms last Friday to the referees and assistant referees who are on the FIFA list.
As Papua New Guinea match officials continue their improvement and development, with four FIFA referees and nine assistant referees, they are being appointed to officiate in more OFC tournaments, and hopefully in the near future will gain appointments to FIFA sanctioned tournaments.
Minan said Papua New Guinea has one of the highest numbers of FIFA referees in the Pacific who gain experience officiating in the Telikom National Soccer League, PNG’s semi-professional competition.
Of the 13 referees in Papua New Guinea, Port Moresby boast five match officials, of which two are referees and three assistant referees, Gororka has two, a referee and an assistant referee, Simbu and Alotau has an assistant referee each while Lae has four, one referee and three assistant referees.
Of all the 13 FIFA match officials, three are female, Stephanie Minan from Port Moresby, Wantin Yagum from Lae and Muriel Bayagau from Alotau who are currently paving the way for more females to get into refereeing.
Mr. Minan encourages the referees to be confident in their decisions when officiating matches, and strive to become role models to the up-and-coming referees.
