Papua New Guinea Football Association in its effort to improve football talents in the country hosted the three-day event at the University of Technology campus ground on Thursday and ended yesterday with the grand finals
The Under 16 Women Tournament was held over the Independence long weekend with six teams coming into Lae for the event. Four teams around Lae including the host Lae Football Association went through a round robin game, which kicked off on Thursday afternoon with Wabag taking on LFA. The young women from the highlands tried but the host team brought them down with the full time score of 6-0.
On the second day, Lahi Football Association defeated almost every game and had a progressive tally with 13 points. LFA made it second with 12 points, followed by Lae Secondary School with ten points. Wau girls earned themselves the fourth position while the visiting teams from, Goroka with four points and Wabag with three.
Of the six participating teams, four teams qualified for the semi finals, on Saturday where Lae Secondary School defeated LFA. Following that, Lahi defeated Wau with a 3- 1 win
In the finals Lahi Football Association turned out to be the champion team of the tournament after claiming an 8- 1 victory over Lae School yesterday.
LFA was presented with the “Fair Play” award and also taking the third spot while 4th place went to Wau. Even though Wau Soccer Association was not awarded anything, majority of the awards were given to them as player Annie Nicholas took the “Player of the Tournament” and the top goal scorer award went to Kamai Penesi also from Wau.
