In only their second year in the competition the Port Moresby based Eastern Stars began their Telikom National Soccer League campaign with a morale boosting 5- 2 win over Niugini Building Supplies Tukoko Uni in Port Moresby on Saturday.
In the earlier match, Gigira Laitepo proved too strong for the Souths with a 2-0 victory with Reginald Davani and Harold Demo as goals scorers while in Lae Besta PNGFA Besta United had too much power over the Morobe Mining Bulolo United defeating them by a 2- nil win.
Following a three week break, Eastern Stars showed no signs of an holiday mood despite allowing the visitors to score the opening goal in the 25th minute through Russell Mirik who scored a double for this side.
A minute later the Stars evergreen midfielder Desmond Waku slammed the equaliser for a 1-all, minutes before the half time whistle.
Tukoko pressured harder in the second half but Stars kept them at bay for a good number of minutes until Pascal Wojem sellted with a double in the 84th minute and 88th minute to extend their lead.
A hard working Tukoko Uni’s Mirik managed to again find the net in the 90th minute but that was only what the boys from Lae could have afford in the injury time.
Franchise owner Joseph Ealadona and stand in coach for the day was happy with the boys performance adding they stuck to the game plan and exucuted well.
The competition ladder after round 11 matches sees Hekari United on 22 points, Besta United 19 points, Gigira Laitepo Central 15 points, NBS Tukoko Uni 7 points, Petro Souths and MMJV Bulolo United both sharing 4 points.
