Former New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert has taken charge of the PNG U-23 squad, with a commission to win gold at the Pacific Games in July and qualifier for the Rio Olympics 2016.
The women’s team have set their sights on defending their title on home soil under Australian coach Gary Phillips and also making the Rio Olympics.
PNGFA coach mentor Milan Miric said PNG Football is lucky to recruit experienced, high-profile coach like Ricki Herbert who knows the recipe to bigger matches and believes with him on board their journey toward the Pacific Games will be of a success.
Miric added that there are some work needed to be done but it was exciting to start the new journey with the U-23 team with things looking positive in the camp.
He said he have faith in the group of players selected who possess everything, skills, speed and toughness but needs more international matches overseas to polish them up before the Pacific Games.
Miric added that obviously Herbert comes at a cost and we are grateful to the Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee, which assists with the financial side of it to be able to lure the high caliber coach like Ricki Herbert to be working with our U-23 men’s national team.
