Mining township ends fourth grand-final

Tabubil Soccer Oval in the Mining township of Star Mountain has been filled with laughter, fun and football over the weekend.

The oval has played host to the Tabubil Soccer Association fourth grand-final organised by the Tabubil Soccer Association.

The fourth ever grand-final was attended by four divisions, the under 17, the women’s division, premier B division and premier A division.

The game kicked off at 9:00 am in the morning with the U17 final which saw Kafins FC defeated Bultem Rock Brothers from Bultem village 2-1with Simon Tony of Kafins FC receive the man of the match award.

In the women’s division defending champion Wang Lakers defend their title by edging out Kafins FC 2-0 and Kabdeb FC with a never say die attitude belted KHL FC 3-1 to claim the men’s premier B title.

After a hectic first three games, the afternoon wraps up with the men’s premier A final between Skotaks FC and Kami FC.

Present to witness the grand-final was PNGFA Southern Region Coordinator Simon Koima who also had the honour to officially kicked of the match between Skotaks and Kami FC.

The match was exhilarating from the opening whistle and the crowd pumped, with first goal scored inside the first 17th minute when Kosam Peter put Kimi FC ahead following a mix-up in the Skotaks defence.

However, Skotaks FC pulled level 7 minutes later as Mitchel Parker struck a fine effort into the top corner from the edge of the box.

The match though filled with display of trickery and solo feats that had the crowd chanting at times, was drawn 1-1 at half-time.

In the second half another defensive lapse by the boys in blue allowed Kenneth Kendy to put the Kimi FC ahead once more but their hopes ended with an equalize from Maxwell Roy force the game to extra time.

With the both teams still locked 2- all in the final whistle of the extra time that leads to a scintillating penalty shoot- out when Skotaks edged out Kimi FC 4-3 to take away the trophy.

Skotaks went into the game as underdogs and proved worthy adversaries from the first touch of the ball to eventuate winner.
