Our national men’s team, according to their preparations plans for the Noumea games where to play five lead up matches in Australia before going across to Noumea. Arriving in Australia last week, they went against Gold Coast Knights last Thursday evening in their first match.
After a slow start Reggie Davani made it through with his first attempt and scored the opening goal of the game heading the ball past the oncoming keeper from a long ball down the middle. The Aussies fought back but could not equalize, and Reggie Davani netted another goal, following a neat build up a good possession football.
The Knights hit back following a defensive lapse in the PNG back line to reduce the deficit, however Cyril Muta restored the two goal advantage with a powerful header from a training ground set piece corner. The PNG boys went into the half time break with a deserved two goal advantage.
The proud boys had a short break and took the field for the second half ready to add more goals to their tally. Gold Coast Knights went on harder in the second half but the visitors maintained their compact defensive unit clearing away all the balls coming their way and the Knights were limited to few chances.
Team PNG pressed on when they saw their fourth goal coming from striker Gari Moka with a fine finish from a right foot half volley. Eric Komeng added a fifth goal before the Knights scored a consolation second, close on full time.
The final score was clearly on PNG’s side beating Gold Coast Knights by 5 goals to 2 with a solid performance. They will be playing Southport on Tuesday (16th) along with the women.
