PNGFA to develop young players

The centre of excellence is a program for developing young players to live a healthy lifestyle in their schools and communities and to build their career in playing football.

This program is a FIFA and OFC program through PNGFA who have been piloting this program in Port Moresby to develop potential talents with the ability and skills to be football players. Those children who have the skills are going through this programme as a next stage beyond the Just Play Program focusing on training these players with quality football techniques.

Every Monday and Wednesday these players, as young as 13 – 15 years old meet at the Sir John Guise Stadium with their coaches where they go through drills on shooting, passing using both feet and also dribbling skills. After the drills they take part in small sided games.

This program will be running for a couple of weeks before these players will be put into teams to take part in a competition so that they will be assessed and selected to take part in the academy program to further develop their skills in playing professional football.

It is now on each individual player to decide if she/he wants to take up football as his/her career in future.

Centre of Excellence program coach Hans Gewebing said young players who had participated in this program since day one and now into the second week had improved alot in their skills of dribbling, passing with both feet, shooting and heading.

Young player who want to be part of the program are encourage to come alone and be part of the program to train to be a better player, said Mr. Gewebing.
