Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) president David Chung is carrying the national flag with distinction.
Chung who is also the Oceania Football Confederation president and automatically a vice-president to FIFA, as one of the six Confederations, has now moved up a notch in the FIFA hierarchy.
The one-time Highlands businessman who was elevated to the post as PNGFA president in 2004, has since grown in stature and power in the sport within the region and on the world stage as well.
Whilst there was no announcement by FIFA, the FIFA Council hierarchy as shown on their website has FIFA president Gianni Infantino (Italy) at the top and Chung (Papua New Guinea) next as the senior vice-president.
This is the first time in the history of FIFA that a Papua New Guinea representative from the Oceania region is the senior vice president…The second most powerful man in the football world.
Chung when contacted, confirmed the position upgrade within the FIFA executive committee.
He would not elaborate on the position and its responsibilities, but only said that he continues to promote PNG every-time he attends a FIFA meeting by carrying the PNG flag.
“I take the PNG flag to every meeting and make sure my colleagues know where I come from.
“I’m just say proud to carry the PNG flag around the world.
“This is for the first time in history of Oceania and the PNGFA to rise to this level.
“I’m just so proud to be a Papua New Guinean as I do this with pride,” added Chung.
