FIFA’s legacy programme, ‘Live Your Goals’ will be rolled out in Goroka this Sunday (9th October) at the National Sports Institute, the home of the PNG U-20 Women’s team.
The event is being spearheaded by the Papua New Guinea Football Association and the Local Organising Committee legacy staff. The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup mascot, Susa will also be part of the program.
The ‘Live Your Goals’ campaign in Papua New Guinea targets young girls from the age of six- to 24. The programme is aimed at promoting and empowering as many young girls as possible and to encourage more women and girls to participate in football.
Children, especially girls from primary schools in Goroka will be participating in the program where they will take part in two hours of football skills lessons taught by coaches who will be there to supervise the young girls.
PNG Football Association President David Chung said the programme was successfully rolled out in Lae and now it is going to Goroka where the PNG U-20 Women are based.
“With the involvement of the PNG U-20 Women team, it could inspire the young girls and women in Goroka to be part of the world’s most popular sport to show that they can achieve their goals through football,” he said.
“Susa, the U-20 Women’s World Cup mascot will be there to promote the tournament amongst the people of Goroka. It is envisaged that through the hosting of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, women can be inspired and empowered to tackle gender prejudice and discrimination in a country like Papua New Guinea,” Chung stated.
Kimbe will be the next stop for the roll out and this should take place towards the end of October.
The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016 will be held from the 13 of November to 3 December.
