Highlands Regional Besta qualifier gets underway

The Highlands Regional Besta Cup qualifier heads into its second day of competition and has attracted 10 male and 6 female teams.

The five-day tournament was kicked off on Tuesday by PNGFA acting president John Wesley Gonjuan and Chimbu Governor Michael Dua.

Simbu Soccer Association president Daina Ulka Uran confirmed that her association hosted 16 teams at Dickson Oval where the tournament was held.

According to Uran, Goroka fielded a women and two men’s team while Kainantu fielded a men and a women team.

“The host association Simbu contributed nine teams – three from the Yongumugl and two each from Tabare, Waiye and Kerowagi,” Uran said.

“Teams like Mt Hagen and Kundiawa town send in only a male team.”

Day one results – In the men’s, Simbu defeated Tabare 2-0, Apo 3 draw with Apo one 1-all and Kainantu beat Yongumugl 2-0.

In the women’s, Kainantu held Simbu to a nil-all while Goroko beat Yongumugl 1-0.

The tournament will continue on to tomorrow and ends on Saturday with the grand final.
