Hoods, PMSA reign in Besta Cup

The Southern-leg of the Besta Cup challenge ended with Hoods 1 (men) and Port Moresby Soccer Association 1 (women) claiming the region’s honours in Port Moresby at Bisini Soccer Ground on Monday.

In an all-Rigo men’s affair, Hoods team one edged Kamali 4-2 for the men’s final while in the women’s final, PMSA seniors beat their development team 2-1.

Hoods are the new men’s champions while PMSA women claim their sixth successive title. The two men’s finalist including PMSA 1 (women) will represent the Southern region at the Besta FA Cup finals in Lae in September.

The all-Rigo challenge produced a high standard of football. This showed that soccer in the Rigo district is developing and growing fast with the active competitions in the village.

In the men’s grand-final saw Hoods 1 take an early 2-0 lead with two fast goals from Renagi Ila. In the second half, Kamali fought back to force an equalizer but failed to hold on in the later stages of the match.

Hoods 1 lifted the tempo and went on to score two more goals to seal the match 4-2.

In the women’s grand-final, it was an even battle between PMSA 1 and PMSA 2 that saw the seniors showing their superiority to win 2-1 in the extra time.

Host chairman Leslie Babaga thank all the participating team especially the village teams in Rigo district for turning up in numbers for the four-day tournament.

He said the tournament was trouble-free and football was played in the true spirit of sportsmanship over its duration.
