The National Soccer League 2019 season kicked off on a high note in the Southern Conference with a good turnout at the Sir John Guise Stadium on Saturday.
It was a colorful atmosphere from the grand stand with a few die hard supporters donning their favorite team uniforms to support their favorite teams.
The opening match of the triple headers saw Central United FC edging PRK Gulf Komara FC 2-1.
The second match was a contest between the underdogs Port Moresby United FC against Eastern Stars FC that saw Port Moresby United FC pulling off an upset 2-1 win against the Eastern Stars FC.
The Stars FC featuring experienced National Soccer League players scouted over the festive season to revive the club were given a shocker when Iamo Maneke found the net to score Port Moresby United FC’s first goal in the 18th minute.
The determination to score goals swayed both ways until Eastern Stars FC managed to equalize with a goal in the 35th minute to Richard Alois.
The latter saw a Chris David’s goal (42nd minute) sealing off the match to bury the Eastern Stars FC spectators’ hope for a winning goal.
The main match of the day between Hekari United FC and FC Bougainville resulted in a 1-0 win for the Men in Red outfit.
It was a good match-up from both teams with several goal scoring opportunities exhibited during the first and second stanza of the match.
In yesterday match, Southern Strikers edged Star Mountains 2-1.
