Port Moresby Soccer Association Premier League competition leader’s Mungkas FC put on a gusty performance to edge out PS Ruts 2-1 at Bisini Soccer Ground yesterday afternoon.
PS Ruts started the game strongly despite leaving some of their starters on the bench.
However, the finishing in the attacking third and outstanding defending from the David Passam’s coached-side meant the PS Ruts could not find a goal as reward for their early dominance.
Mungkas put their foot forward to settle down and started threatening from wide areas which allowed Able Redenut, who return a volley over the goalkeeper for the opening goal.
PS regrouped midway through the first half and push forward which resulted in an equaliser from Obert Bika.
With eight minutes remaining before the half-time whistle, Mungkas lifted their tempo to force a penalty in the box and Danny Vetali stepped up to score the second goal to lead 2-1 at half-time.
Mungkas in the second half had several more opportunities to put the result beyond doubt but striker Basil Jofari was closely marked by defenders Carlos Geno and Kenneth Gideon.
The second half of the match was tight as Mungkas put up a strong defence to defend their 2-1 lead to full time.
In the second game, University drew 3-3 with Maclaren while on Saturday Cosmos beat Momase 3-1 and Keleiruna hold Genesis to a 1-all draw.
Competition manager Paul Karambi said the race to finish on top of the Port Moresby Soccer Association’s Premier League is still up for grabs with each team has five more games remaining.
“It was announced earlier this year that the team that topped the Premier League at the completion of all the regular matches would be crowned champions,” Paul Karambi said.
