The 2019-2020 Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League goes into a long Christmas break after the last game of the year played at the weekend. The season will resume on January 11 with round three.
In the weekend’s game saw Vitiaz United, Hekari United and Lae City continued their winning run beating their respective teams at PNG Football Stadium in Port Moresby.
The game between Vitiaz United and Star Mountain saw poor coordination from the Tabubil boys which resulted in Vitiaz United coming from behind to beat the Selan Elizah coached-side 3-1.
Star Mountain was the first to score through Bisakim Alfred but the celebration was short-lived when Eliude Fugre responded with an equalizer for Vitiaz United.
The Trevor Ire coached-side capitalized on Mountain’s defensive weakness to score two more goals in the second half through Russel Nirik and an own goal from Star Mountain’s Nowe Simon.
In the Hekari-Bougainville match, Hekari United maintained the top spot on the ladder after surviving a hard-fought match against FC Bougainville to come out winners 2-1.
The Jerry Allen coached-side was made to work hard to brush aside the challenge from the David Passam coached-side.
Hekari United, led by David Muta, Michael Foster, Koriak Upaiga, Daniel Joe, Nathan James and two Kepo brothers Kolu and Ati did not take any chances against Bougainville.
Kolu Kepo opened scoring for Hekari in the 6th minute with a good goal to put them in the lead.
Just before both teams were heading for halftime, Bougainville striker Jonathan Allen delivered the equalizer to send the Bougainville fans into frenzy.
Both sides shared equal possession throughout the second half however, Bougainville were at their worst when Kolu Kepo was pulled down and Daniel Joe took a spot kick to cushion their lead 2-1.
In the main game played under the light at PNG Football Stadium saw defending champion and Gulf Komara had an equal share of possession in both halves with many wasted goal scoring opportunities.
Raymond Gunemba saved the day for the defending champion to score the only goal from a penalty kick.
Komara had several chances to equalize but City’s goalkeeper Matterson Nasa was in top form.
